Duncan Shiels Vándorkupa

The Duncan Shiels Vándor kupa is named the honour of Duncan Shiels. Duncan (second from left, front row, pictured here with the Islanders team in 1990) worked as a journalist for Reuters for many years, first coming to Budapest in 1986. He also found success in the literary world, having his biography on 'The Brothers Rajk" published in the Autumn 2006.
Football-wise, Duncan was one of the founding members of the Islanders team way back in the nineteen eighties, and over the years it was, undoubtedly, his prompting that brought numerous foreigners into the folds of the team and consequently the now burgeoning amateur expat football scene in Budapest. Many a lasting friendship was forged during a post-match drink on Margitsziget or at the Fehér Gyuru bar, and for those involved, the social side of things was as much, if not more important than the enjoyment of kicking a ball around.
The Islanders took on the name ‘Szigeti’ only in 2000, a name indeed chosen in reference to those early kick-arounds on Margitsziget. Such kick-arounds on Margitsziget are rare these days due to the teams now playing in the somewhat more competitive Football Budapest championship. Without Duncan and the like, there simply wouldn't have been the impetus or notion within Szigeti to even be at a level where considering and instigating the now flourishing championship might be on the cards. The fact that FootballBudapest has been running for 8 years now and provides an opportunity for over 250 footballers in Budapest, both local and foreign (from more than 50 different countries) to play the sport on a regular basis, is testimony to those early pioneers such as Duncan, perhaps unknowingly set the foundations for expat football as it is today in Budapest.
